What is the purpose of USIJI?

USIJI activities support the following objectives:

  • To encourage the rapid development and implementation of cooperative, cost-effective, voluntary projects between U.S. and foreign partners, especially projects that promote technological cooperation and sustainable development
  • To promote projects to test and evaluate methodologies for measuring, tracking, and verifying costs and benefits
  • To contribute to the formulation of international criteria for JI
  • To foster private sector investment and innovation in the development and dissemination of technologies for reducing or sequestering GHG emissions
  • To encourage participating countries to adopt more complete climate action programs, including national inventories, baselines, policies and measures, and appropriate specific commitments.
The program provides public recognition and limited technical assistance to participants in accepted projects. The emissions reduced or sequestered by each project are tracked and recorded.
